Cisterns
Cisterns are a sustainable method of capturing, storing, and using rain. They are commonly used in areas where water is scarce, has been polluted or has been depleted due to heavy use. Cisterns have been used for many centuries for drinking and livestock water as well as for crops and are still in use today and gaining popularity in the U.S. as fresh water becomes more and more scarce. Cisterns can be utilized as both a whole house water supply or simply to water the lawn during dry months. Health problems related to cistern drinking water is essentially none existent, and many cisterns are in use today without filtration systems or even yearly maintenance. With a little maintenance and a whole house water filter the primarily harmless microb’s and bacteria can be removed to supply a completely safe and far healthier drinking water than any municipal water supplies which are contaminated with chlorine (which is a poison readily absorbed by the body) as well as automotive, fertilizer, pesticide and even human and animal waste.
Cisterns are important to use where possible as the more fresh water we use in our homes, business and industry the more that we pollute. In addition, the less waste water we send back to treatment plants the less fresh water supply we pollute and the less there is to process and treat. Rain water is far more purer than tap water and even some well waters and contains little if any pesticides, herbicides and minerals. When run through a whole house filter this water is not only safe to drink but also healthier. The western states are running out of fresh water and in fact the Rio Grande River has even dried up in some years as fresh water supplies are being pulled from it. There are also many municipal water supplies that are running out of water for their areas including Atlanta which reservoir got to the point of a state of emergency. The displaced rainwater from roofs has little affect on local water supplies and even helps prevent erosion from excess runoff as well as limiting pollutants from yards and streets in the runoff to get into the water shed. So no matter where you live, just installing a cistern to water the yard is a great help to the environment.
There are many costs by type, size, volume and collection considerations in the types of roofing, filtering and storage devices and materials as well as various collection and purification processes that must be considered for area and site specific projects as well as what capacity should be utilized as well as the length of service required for each project. Thus each project must be assessed on a case by case basis.
We can set up and install whole house systems or just a simple yard watering system.
