Landscaping
Landscaping is in an integral part of the sustainable building and energy efficient construction process and strategically placing various trees, shrubs, vines and groundcover can not only make your home more comfortable to live in but also lower energy bills while adding curb appeal and increasing the value of your home. Trees and shrubbery should be native and selectively placed in order to conserve water and help cool the structure in the summer and allow for solar gain in the winter. On average, well placed landscaping can reduce utility bills by 25 percent or more, and save on winter heating bills by as much as 15 percent while cutting summer cooling requirements by 50 percent or more.

Winds accelerate the rate of air exchange between a house’s exterior and interior environments through leaks in the building envelope that replace conditioned air in the structure with outside unconditioned air. You can block these winds, create summer shade, channel cool breezes, reduce glare through windows, buffer noise pollution, reduce air pollution and even filter out the destructive forces of ultraviolet rays on building materials with strategic landscaping. Attractive landscaping not only provides shade from the intense summer sun, but also produces transpiration which is a cooling affect from the release of water from green plants during hot days. In fact temperatures can be up to 9 degrees cooler in the shade of trees during the heat of the day as opposed to treeless neighborhoods, and up to 25 degrees cooler than areas of blacktop (parking lots). Tree cover along thermal mass objects that absorb and retain heat like streets, sidewalks and driveways will help them keep cooler as well as your immediate landscape and the area around your home. This too can make outdoor areas like porches and patios more comfortable to be on and thus used more often.

A well planned landscape is just as important as a well built structure and can provide a nice return on investment from energy savings as well as increased property values and benefits to our environment. We simply need to plant more trees and shrubs in our cities to help keep them cooler and cut down on air pollution.
