Low VOC Interiors
As new construction becomes more and more air tight the indoor air is becoming more and more polluted. Mechanically controlled fresh air intake will substantially reduce this problem but will not stop the off gassing from building materials and furniture that contain volatile organic compounds.
Volatile organic compounds change easily from liquid to vapors and many building components, products and adhesives contain high levels of VOC’s and can pose a risk to the general population. Children and the elderly are especially susceptible to these chemicals with health affects ranging from eye and breathing problems, headaches, nausea, fatigue, allergic skin reactions, dizziness, loss of coordination, memory impairment, overall ill health and even cancer depending on the levels and length of exposure as some compounds are highly toxic.
Fortunately there are now a number of low and no VOC building materials available. Today we have a good choice of less polluting paints, adhesives, solvents, cleaning agents, caulks, wood products, carpets and sealants.
Using low and no VOC materials for new construction and remodeling projects can significantly reduce the emission of these volatile organic compounds. Traditionally, new homes and commercial buildings generally had VOC concentrations that were two to ten times higher than older buildings which has created a condition in many that is known as sick building syndrome. This condition can be eliminated by using low and no VOC building materials as well as installing a mechanical air exchange system. We take pride in using building materials and products with no and low VOC’s in our sustainable construction practices.
