Healthier Interiors
We spend approximately 90 percent of our time indoors, yet the air inside our homes are on average 2 to 10 times more polluted and worse in many cases. This pollution comes from various sources including old stale air from air tight construction, off gassing from construction components like paint, adhesives, engineered wood products, carpeting, furniture and plastics as well as household cleaning products. Many of these chemicals are toxic and can even be deadly with over exposure, but none the less more and more people are exhibiting allergies and other health problems due to indoor pollution problems.
There are ways to reduce our chemical exposure in our homes as well as ways of supplying an adequate volume of clean fresh air in our living environments. A good start is to use low and no VOC (volatile organic compounds) in the construction or renovation process as well as limiting the use of carpeting and using natural rugs natural carpeting depending on your level of susceptibility to these types of chemicals. In addition, a mechanical air to air heat exchanger can be added to supply fresh air from outdoors without the loss of heating or cooling energy that has been expended inside. This coupled with a good filtration system will create a far healthier indoor environment.
Healthier interiors should also contain more natural lighting as studies have been done that prove natural lighting in work places produces for less sick days and an increase in productivity. New homes as well as renovations should take advantage of window placement to provide for more natural lighting both direct and indirect.
