Living Sustainably
We must remember that we are temporary stewards of this earth and how we live today will impact our ancestors for many generations to come. Sustainable living is a practice of consuming no more resources than the earth can produce. Unfortunately we are either at or past that point as our natural resources are being depleted. Our current construction and fresh water management techniques are unsustainable and are literally destroying the eco system of our earth. Old growth timber is all but gone and timber resources are being over consumed. In addition fresh unpolluted surface and ground water is becoming more difficult to find. The earth's life support systems are being degraded and depleted at an accelerating rate and it is imperative that we begin changing our built environment now to mitigate and begin reversing the damages that have already been done. We are stressing our earth to the point we are literally killing it and we must change our ways or the human race shall surely perish. It is everyone’s responsibility to do their part to change this. Smart growth, urban infill, denser development, utilizing new materials and construction methods, better building designs, building longer lasting structures that require less maintenance, utilizing the earth and sun to help heat and cool our homes, building more energy efficient structures, using construction materials that are readily renewable, recyclable and sustainable, decreasing waste water and water consumption and better management and filtration of water runoff will help minimize our ecological impact.

Globally we are facing challenges to house the increasing number of occupants on this plant without depleting our material and energy resources. In the last 100 years the population has increased from 1 billion to 6 billion. At this very moment we are on the edge of sustainability and if our population continues to grow as projected then there is no way the earth can provide for us utilizing our current building materials, methods and energy consumption.
We must immediately begin to build smarter, be more creative and resourceful as well as more energy efficient and utilize the natural processes of the earth and renewable energies to reduce our environmental impact.

Fortunately the knowledge and technology is available today to significantly reduce our current and long term environmental impact from construction and development. Many of these solutions come at a minimal increase in construction costs and have a short term payback that then provide additional returns on investment and higher resale values. We can also reduce material consumption in the building process, create longer lasting lower maintenance structures and reduce building energy needs by a minimum of 50% to up to 100% with only a minimal increase in construction costs depending on desired levels of energy savings.

Thus energy efficient and sustainable construction practices are not only good for the environment but also for the investor or homeowner. In conclusion, it is not only conscionable to build sustainable structures, it also pays to build green.
