Water Management
Fresh water is quickly becoming a precious and depleting resource and we must use this resource wisely as well as limit its contamination. It is difficult if not impossible to find pure water now that is not contaminated in one form or another and the more we use it the more we contaminate it. Even fresh rainwater is being contaminated with landscape and crop fertilizers and pesticides as well as leaking chemicals on the streets and parking lots from our automobiles. The runoff water from commercial buildings is contaminating our lakes, rivers and oceans as well as spoiling ground water resources. In addition, many states in the western United States are simply running out of fresh water. Contaminates from out cities are being carried to the oceans to the point they are creating dead zones such that nothing can live in them. These dead zones are growing in size and in number around the world and are starting to become of great concern. Thus, we must learn how to manage and protect our fresh water resources no matter where we are. A good start for commercial businesses is to use cisterns to capture rain water from roofs to use in toilets as well as watering landscaping in dryer months. The use of organic fertilizers and pest control measures also help alleviate this problem and organic fertilizers require less water to keep your landscaping green.
Additional measures to reduce fresh water use and contamination is to install automated sinks and low flow water fixtures. Many new and remodeled commercial buildings have cut potted water use by 30% to 50% with these added features and with the use of a cistern that use can be cut even further. This reduces the stress on water supply systems, reduces waste water treatment, cuts down on erosion problems by excess water runoff and reduces contaminated waste water leaving the building that has to be treated. Using a green cleaning plan (environmentally friendly cleaning products) is also a great help to the environment as it substantially reduces water contamination. The reuse of gray water from sinks for landscaping also reduces waste water and is good for landscaping when environmentally friendly cleaning agents are use, but it is harder to apply in commercial applications.
